You’re ready to crack a cold drink, kick your feet up, and take in the fresh air. But before you can relax, you’ve got to get your rig parked, level, and fully hooked up. If you don't have a solid system in place, setting up camp can turn into a stressful argument fast. Step 1: Site Inspection & Positioning

Before you back into your campsite or pull through, get out of your truck and walk the area on foot. • Spot Obstacles & Overhead Clearance: Check for low-hanging tree branches, big rocks, electrical boxes, or underground utility roots that could scrape your roof or slide-outs. • Locate Utility Hookups: Identify where the electric pedestal, city water spigot, and sewer drop are located to ensure your hoses and 30/50-amp shore power cables will reach comfortably without stretching. • Position for Shade & Privacy: Angle your rig so your main patio awning blocks the harsh afternoon sun and provides privacy from neighboring campsites.

Step 2: Leveling & Chocking (Safety First)

Never unhitch your trailer until your tires are securely chocked and side-to-side level is achieved. • Achieve Side-to-Side Level: Place curved leveling blocks or stacked pads under the low-side tires, then slowly drive or reverse onto them until your bubble level is centered. • Set Heavy-Duty Wheel Chocks: Place sturdy wheel chocks tightly behind and in front of your trailer tires on both sides to prevent any rolling hazard before unhooking from your hitch ball or fifth-wheel pin. • Unhitch & Level Front-to-Back: Disconnect your safety chains, breakaway cable, and wiring harness. Use your power tongue jack or front landing gear to raise the trailer off the hitch, then adjust until front-to-back level is dialed in. • Deploy Stabilizer Jacks: Lower your rear and front stabilizer jacks until they make firm contact with rubber jack pads on the ground. Remember: stabilizer jacks are for steadying side-to-side motion, not lifting the weight of the trailer!

Step 3: Utility Connections & Slide-Out Deployment

Once your coach is completely stable and level, it's time to connect your living essentials. • Connect Water System: Attach a brass water pressure regulator to the campground spigot first, attach an inline water filter, and connect your drinking-water hose to the city water inlet on your rig. Turn the spigot on and check for fittings leaks. • Plug in Power: Ensure the campsite circuit breaker is turned OFF before plugging in your surge protector and heavy-duty shore power cord. Once plugged in, flip the breaker ON to protect your delicate onboard electronics from voltage spikes. • Deploy Slide-Outs & Awnings: Visually check inside and outside the coach to ensure no tree trunks, walls, or interior items block slide pathways. Extend slide-outs fully, open your patio awning, and set out your exterior rug and camping chairs. • Hook Up Waste Lines (If Full Hookup): Connect your heavy-duty sewer hose using a transparent elbow to the campsite drain valve. Keep the black tank valve CLOSED until it's time to dump so liquid doesn't drain out early and leave solids behind.

Step 4: Interior Climate & Comfort Prep

Get the interior living space prepped so your cabin stays cool and comfortable. • Turn On Climate Control: Switch on your multi-zone A/C units or power up your cooling system early before interior heat builds up. • Purge Air from Water Lines: Turn on your kitchen and bathroom faucets for a few seconds to bleed out trapped air bubbles from the water lines. • Power Up Refrigeration: Switch your 12V or residential refrigerator over to power mode so your sweet tea, drinks, and food stay cold throughout your stay.
